Frontbenchers urged to quit over NEG

Australian Associated Press

Coalition MP Keith Pitt is reportedly considering resigning from the federal frontbench in protest over the national energy guarantee, as an internal campaign against the policy gains momentum.

The Australian says frontbenchers opposed to the NEG are being urged to quit in support of rebel MPs such as former prime minister Tony Abbott – an option being weighed up by Mr Pitt, the assistant minister to the deputy prime minister.

Malcolm Turnbull got his energy proposal through the coalition party room on Tuesday, despite opposition from a small group of MPs, but is likely to need Labor’s support if a number of coalition MPs choose to vote against it.
