A 29-year-old woman who publicly battled depression jumped to her death from a 12-story building in Northern Brazil after firefighters tried to talk her down safely.
A woman, 29, who confronted her bouts with depression jumped to her death from her 12-story building in northern Brazil as firefighters attempted to restrain her.
A cellphone video recorded the frightening moment Grazielli Martinelli stood up and ran towards the edge of her building’s water tank and leaped after she noticed a fireman approach her.
Authorities and family members in the port city of Belém spent five hours last Monday trying to convince the half-naked woman to climb down.
According to Brazilian outlet Paraweb News, Martinelli was recently admitted to a hospital after suffering an emotional breakdown.

The fire department employed a rescue method where a firefighter or family member would distract the fashion designer while a second firefighter would be tasked with physically restraining her.
But the sight of the firefighters unraveled Martinelli’s state of mind seconds before she jumped off the building.
Martinelli was known in her community for her activism with social and indigenous issues centered around the Brazilian Amazon.
She faced her emotional demons by publicly speaking about her depression.

Grazielli Martinelli was recently hospitalized because of an emotional breakdown before she committed suicide September 2
‘There are days when even I am surprised by the brightness of my eyes and that giant smile. Yes, once again I admit, the cure comes from within,’ Martinelli wrote on her Instagram account, which has since been deactivated.
‘Feeling at peace is the path of such self-knowledge. Of course, crisis will come, and then? That’s the secret. Breathing and observing what is going on inside is the solution to acting out.’
But the young woman’s willingness to combat her issues with depression led her to broach the subject of death earlier this year when she asked if she would be the next person to commit suicide.
‘Am I next?’ Martinelli wondered aloud on a Facebook post dated February 3.
‘No matter how hard they try to shut me up, my strength is bigger! My voice, and my healing. Our voice, and the healing! The time has come to stop throwing this dust under the carpet. I would rather die with my truth than survive the lie and hypocrisy of this society! With love, for love.’
