As the saying goes, for everything there is a season.

And when luxury fashion house Balenciaga’s spring 2018 runway collection featured a parade of models in baggy denim jeans, purposely ugly running shoes and over-sized trouser suits, perhaps the most unlikely style trend of the decade was born.

Enter: ‘Dad chic’, or as Vogue prefer to call it, ‘dadcore’.

Across sartorial scenes the world over, men – and then every second woman on Instagram – began dressing like stereotypical suburban fathers.

FEMAIL broke down the enduring trends of ‘Daggy Dad fashion’ still taking centre stage on social media in Australia.

OVER-SIZED TROUSER SUITS

Once the default wardrobe choice of male office workers in the 1990s, the formerly drab and dreary over-sized trouser suit experienced a vibrant makeover.

The trend has been blazing a trail across Instagram’s explore feed since the beginning of the year, with Hollywood starlet Blake Lively recently wearing a staggering six matching co-ordinate suits in just twelve hours.

Kourtney Kardashian created an effortlessly elegant take on the masculine trouser suit during a recent trip to Capri, where she styled an emerald green Sandro set with flat, forest green loafers by Gucci.

Popular accessories to accompany the trouser suit include colourful ’90s hair scrunchies, sunglasses of every size and variety and bum bags worn around the waist or slung across the chest.

PLATFORM SNEAKERS

In a nostalgic throwback to the 1980s, heritage style sneakers are currently enjoying their moment in the sun with brands like Adidas Stan Smith, Fila, New Balance and the ubiquitous Balenciaga front and centre.

TWO-PIECE TRACKSUITS

From bona fide athletic brands like Adidas to haute couture houses such as Vetements, the fashion world has collectively jumped on the tracksuit bandwagon over the past year.

Australian e-commerce label Meshki launched a flirty take on the look with soft toned pastel co-ord sets featuring low necks and form fitting bottoms.

A fusion of dadcore and the hugely popular athleisure trend, the matching two piece has been rocked by celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, Gigi Hadid and even the Duchess of Cambridge herself.

BAGGY JEANS

The Wall Street Journal recently declared that ‘Dad style is now in fashion – yes, even the jeans’.

According to fashion historian Elizabeth Semmelhack, baggy denim and the dad trend in general is ‘the perfect antidote to fashion’s seriousness’ and an ironic way for women to make a statement.

‘They [the women] are super fashionable and beautiful themselves,’ she said, explaining that wearing aesthetically jarring, edgy and over-sized clothing offers a clever contrast.
