It is one thing to allow sleeping dogs lie. But Nigerians will not only let these dogs lie but will constantly whip them to make as much noise as possible. Most especially when the sleeping dogs involves something that tarnishes our national identity. Even worse a national disgrace perpetrated by the Nigerian president.
The case of President Muhammadu Buhari plagiarising President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech has not easily gone down as Nigerians keep raining condemnation on the presidency on Twitter. Nigerians have not relented in mocking the President, preferring to point out the incidence as a typical embarrassment of the leader who campaigns for ‘Change’ from Nigerians.
Bearing the harsh tag #TheStolenSpeech, the case of the plagiarized speech trended on the microblogging site Twitter, as some accused the Presidency to have denied taking responsibility for it until the plagiarism story surfaced on BBC.
It was that bad that the Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, had confessed that the paragraph nine of Buhari’s speech at the ‘Change Begins With Me’ campaign launch was a ‘copy and paste’ of Obama’s 2008 speech.
He rather attributed the blame to the over zealous insert error of an ambitious staff in the Presidency. And as of now, the guilty personnel is being allegedly expelled from Aso Rock.
All the same, such costly errors should be well avoided on the national front. Someone in the US basically associates anything Nigeria with scam and a case of plagiarism coming from the Nigerian president himself is almost a confirmation that theft is officially a cultural export of Nigeria.
No one is an island of his own neither can one broomstick…
