In this very country where billions of naira are well transported off public treasury with just a pen, honesty is very rare. The dirt of corruption has been too thick to even be sponged off even by religion. The white collar of the clergy man is no longer the certificate to holiness. But then one stunning stuff happened in Unilorin that reminded us the virtue of honesty going extinct in our modern society.
A 300-Level Sociology student who goes by the name Jephtaph Abolarin had penned down a letter addressing it to the Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State. In the letter he made an unraveling confession to cheating in course of his West African Senior School Certificate Examination. Thus to compensate for his misgivings, he is pushing for withdrawal from Unilorin.
In a reactionary move, the school authorities on Sunday had given their undisputed response of accepting the voluntary withdrawal of the student from Unilorin.
Abolarin, who on the grounds of renewed faith being ‘born again’ Christian, had announced that persisting on with his academic journey in Unilorin built on an undeserved certificate was unfair, too tainted with immorality. This thus provoked him to pull out from the institution.
Abolarin made a submission of the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.
In the letter, he made explanation of the urgent need to pull out from Unilorin owing to his guilt of getting WASSCE through distorted means.
Kunle Akogun who operates as the institution’s Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, gave official confirmation of the withdrawal.
Akogun, while recognising that the Senate of the university had fully accepted the withdrawal letter, also chipped in that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, was notably impressed commending Abolarin for his uncommon show of repentance.
Extracts from Abolarin’s letter reads, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse.
“All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.
“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.
“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.
“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”
We just hope our leaders can imitate this young man and return our looted resources patriotically deflating their pot bellies. Our government houses are well malnourished of sincerity. Personally, I recommend this Abolarin for the global Nobel Prize for Peace.
Officially our dear nation is in recession.
