The sentence of jailed former Delta State governor, James Ibori, is still valid even in face of evidence that a British police officer was involved in bribery in course of the investigation of his case, according to solid report coming from the Britain’s state prosecution agency.
Ibori, who served as a governor of Delta State for a tenure running from 1999 to 2007, happened to be among Nigeria top political elite, and at present is tied to his 13-year sentence in a British prison; the sentence coming after James Ibori pleaded guilty in 2012 to 10-count charge bothering on money-laundering and fraud .
Ibori's conviction marks the highest senior Nigerian politician to who is arrested on the grounds of corruption whch so far has terrorized Nigeria for over fifty years now, with his sentence well recognized as a rallying point in the global combat of money laundering.
But the case consequently turned out an ugly stain for Britain as one of Ibori’s associates, who was also found guilty of money-launderer Bhadresh Gohil, has raised an outcry that the judicial process was compromised owing to prosecutors distorting evidence which exposed police corruption.
At first British authorities made a complete denial of the claim even charging Gohil with perversion of the supposed path of justice, but then the prosecution was suspiciously lifted sometime in January.
During Ibori's sentencing back in 2012, the court had gotten information that he had been lavishing an extravagant lifestyle rocking foreign properties as well as a fleet of luxury cars. Even as when Ibori was arrested, he was attempting to purchase a private jet worth $20 million!
The pangs of corruption have so sunk into the flesh…
