It is no new story that our nation is drowning in recession. The Nigerian economy is so sick that the government houses at Abuja have failed to be formidable clinics. Many suggestions have come up as minds draw map for our economy to leave the woods.
One of such moves has been the president seeikng emergency powers from the National Assembly. This was refuted at first and now the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, came out today to give explanation why President Muhammadu Buhari is pushing for the National Assembly’s approval for a number of emergency economic powers.
According to reports gathered from premium times, the minister, who briefed the media on efforts by the federal government to push the nation past this economic crisis said “unusual times need unusual measures.”
With our economy already languishing in recession, analysts are prescribing that Nigeria can no longer be entertained to wastage of time in discovering solutions to resuscitate an ailing economy.
Mrs. Adeosun, assured Nigerians the government was well conscious of the agony Nigerians were immersed in at present, promising us the President Buhari was wasting no time in acquitting our economy of the recession within the shortest possible time.
To combat the deficiency of infrastructure, which the minister had pointed out as the government’s largest bottleneck, Mrs. Adeosun had remarked the long procurement process must be sharply trimmed to cut down time elapsed in contract awards.
Although the current crisis we are facing today is a big woe, emergency powers tend to be callous in that they can be easily abused even in ignorance, the National Assembly must thus do their home work properly before conceding such powers if necessary.
